Questions of the World

Question #3:

How is it the Holy Spirit convicts us of righteousness today when John 16 says that the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins?

Response:

John 16.8 “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Heb 10.12 - But this Man, after He had offered ONE sacrifice for sins FOREVER, SAT DOWN at the right hand of God,

From Heb 10.12 above we learn that the ONE sacrifice, which is Jesus Christ, bought us forgiveness of sins FOREVER. Christ’s work is finished (Jn 19.30) as our High Priest, that’s why he can now sit (SAT DOWN) down at the right hand of God. Jesus sat down on the right hand of God not because He is the Son of God (which He is) but because His work is finished! The sitting down is a picture of REST and the right hand is a position of power.

The high priests of the Old Testament days have to perform their duties standing up in the tabernacle of Moses and because their work is never finished they are pictured as never sitting down and never resting. But because we have the perfect High Priest in Jesus Christ, and through His one perfect sacrifice, He can now sit down and rest at the right hand of God because His work is finished.

Coming back to John 16.8, Jesus convicts the world (unbelievers) of SIN (singular) and that one sin is the sin of unbelief.

This is clearly explained in John 16.9 viz, “of sin, because they do not believe in Me;

So today if we sin, we tell our Father, ‘Dear Lord I goofed again but thank you that I am still righteous before You because of what Christ has done on the Cross not what I have done.’

When we begin to be Jesus conscious rather than sin conscious (law conscious), we allow the Holy Spirit to work a deeper work in us to walk in good works which our Father God has prepared beforehand for us. Ep 2.10 - For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

When we begin to be Jesus conscious (grace conscious) sin shall not have dominion over us.

Rom 6.14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace

Would you like to accept God’s gift of righteousness graciously given to you in His Son, Jesus Christ?
